New Work by Julia Loopstra

Julia Loopstra is a painter, illustrator, cartoonist, baker, wife, cat owner, picture framer, and collector of exquisite knickknacks. Originally from Santa Rosa, CA, she attended California College of the arts where she graduated with a BFA in illustration in 2017. When she graduated, she found a comfortable niche writing and drawing weekly webcomics, the longest running being her series Vampire Boyfriend which can still be found on Webtoons. Though she has never been published in the New Yorker, she will continue submitting work until they eventually either accept something or kindly ask her to stop. She currently lives in San Francisco with her husband and cat in a very small apartment she has filled with entirely too many art projects.
“Hello and welcome to Movie Nite Part II: This Time it’s Spooky. As the title would suggest, this is my second show at Nielsen Arts and I am so excited to be here. When I was asked for a second series of movie paintings I jumped at the opportunity to focus on a horror theme. My mother loved classic scary movies and raised me and my brother on Hitchcock, The Blob, and episodes of Mystery Science Theater. My love for horror movies, both corny and truly terrifying, grew from there. In fact some of my earliest interest in drawing came from drawing monsters. Witches, werewolves, vampires, and ghosts filled my early sketchbooks and were doodled along the margins of my school papers, much to the dismay of my teachers. I loved making this series so much, and am excited to share it with you. Please enjoy.”
